ARCADIS coordinated the reassessment of rubberized surface for the running track, performed sampling and supervision for removal of the underground oil tank at the Auto Shop and cleanup of contaminated soil at the Bus Barn, and administered the review and cost proposals for design changes after issuance of the 100% design documents, various Owner requested changes and value engineering options.
Bettisworth North (BNAP) and their design team continued responding to State DEED review questions, reviewed numerous submittals, clarified contractor questions about design details, provided technical input and evaluated numerous options, including the track and athletic field surfaces.
Harris completed foundation excavation and backfill of the building, finished installing footing drain and storm drain on west side of the building, installed fire hydrants, worked on the sewer system, excavated and backfilled canopy footings for the 15,000 gallon fuel tank, and demolished the Bus Barn foundation. Dawson installed sidewalks, curb and gutter along south side of the High School, performed trenching and backfill for underground utilities inside the building, constructed footings for the fuel tank, and removed the underground oil tank at the Auto Shop. Dawson also finished the building footings and stem walls up to slab grade, continued constructing corbels, started erecting exterior metal walls, insulation and plywood. MJM Services mobilized and paved the bus staging area. Swanson Steel erected most of the structural steel and trusses and 75% of the metal decking. Megawatt installed construction power, ground cable and underground conduit for the mechanical and electrical rooms. Mantech continued layout, installed new roof ducts for the High School Auto Shop, started installing underground waste pipe, water lines and drain pipe for the roof. Interior Alaska Roofing mobilized and started installing substrate and EPDM at the CTE and Gym areas.
EMC Engineering continued special inspections, soil and concrete testing and testing of backfill for City utilities as needed.
ARCADIS coordinated the selection and preparation of a temporary football field at Meyring Park, facilitated the decision process to use artificial turf instead of sod, expedited the FM Global insurance review of roofing design, and administered the comparison of 65% design and GMP costs with the 100% design, various options and GMP costs.

High School building demolition and haul-off was completed. CVTC completed installation of temporary phone and internet services. Harris completed mass excavation in the building area, most of foundation excavation, and backfill east half of the building. Harris is installing new storm drains along Robe River Drive. They stubbed sewer and water services inside the building foundations. Old sidewalk and curbs were removed, unsuitable material excavated and fill placed for new sidewalks and curb at the bus staging area. Swanson Steel Erectors mobilized and started erecting structural steel, trusses and metal decking on the east portion of the building. The Bus Barn was moved offsite for placement on a new foundation near the Public Works shop. Megawatt Electric and Mantech Mechanical mobilized, started layout installing sleeves through foundation stemwalls. EMC Engineering continued special inspection and testing of soil and concrete.
ARCADIS provided event coordination services for the new Middle School Ground Breaking Celebration held on Friday, May 24th. Mayor Dave Cobb, City Manager John Hozey, and Principal Rod Morrison gave introductory remarks to about 300 students, parents, staff and community members. A “gold shovel” ceremony with five members of the Gilson family was held and then all enjoyed the 75 degree sunshine for a community BBQ. The following week, ARCADIS managed the move of all furniture, boxes and equipment out of the middle school. The VCS maintenance team harvested salvageable items from the existing school and the abatement team and contractor readied the building for demolition. A community salvage sale will be held at the Bus Barn in mid-June 2013.
ARCADIS prepared City Council information for approval of Special Inspection services and Dawson’s GMP contract amendment based on 65% design. The team continued coordination with utilities for relocation and provision of temporary power to the pool, the high school and the construction project.
Bettisworth North Architects (BNAP) produced 95% civil and structural design documents which have been submitted to the State Fire Marshal and the City of Valdez for review. The remaining 95% design was received the first week in June. Documents will be refined to 100% by the first week in July.
Dawson Construction, Inc. (DCI) is providing material submittals, mobilizing on site and preparing for demolition of the existing Junior High school and early civil work.
